MikroTik hAP ax3 vs ax2: Which Router Fits Your Network?
MikroTik's hAP ax line brought Wi-Fi 6 to the company's famously affordable RouterOS boxes. Two models get the most attention — the hAP ax2 and the hAP ax3 — and picking between them comes down to how much throughput and PoE flexibility you actually need.

The hAP ax2 is the value pick: dual-band Wi-Fi 6, five gigabit ports, and RouterOS in a compact fanless case. The hAP ax3 steps up with higher-gain radios, a 2.5 Gigabit port, and PoE-out — meaningful upgrades if you're pushing a fast internet plan or powering a downstream device.
Where the ax3 pulls ahead
- 2.5G port: if your ISP hands you more than a gig, the ax3 won't bottleneck it.
- PoE-out: power a second AP or a camera straight from the router — no extra injector.
- Stronger radios: 3.3/5.5 dBi antennas give a bit more coverage and cleaner high-MCS rates.
When the ax2 is the smarter buy
If your plan is a gigabit or less, your coverage area is a normal home or small office, and you don't need PoE-out, the ax2 delivers the same RouterOS power for less money. For a lot of prosumer and homelab setups, it's the sweet spot.

Both run RouterOS 7, which is the real reason to buy MikroTik: VLANs, real firewalling, VPN (WireGuard included), containers, and scripting that enterprise gear charges a subscription for. The learning curve is real, but so is the payoff.
