Build a UniFi home lab

Build a UniFi Home Lab: Gear, Racking, and a Clean Network

A home lab is where you learn networking for real, and UniFi has become the platform of choice for it: one clean console, gear that looks as good as it performs, and a rack you are proud to show off. This guide lays out a UniFi home lab from the gateway down to cable management, with the right pick at each budget. Every product linked is in stock at Javelin Networks with fast US shipping.

The four layers of a home lab

Whether you are wiring a single closet or a full rack, a UniFi build is the same four layers: a gateway (router + firewall + controller), switches to connect and power everything, access points for Wi-Fi, and optionally cameras in the same console. Get the gateway right first — it sets the ceiling for speed and device count.

The gateway — brain of the lab

If you want a rack unit that also runs cameras, start with a Dream Machine. The Dream Machine SE is the home-lab favorite: 1U, built-in PoE to power a few APs or cameras directly, and a drive bay for UniFi Protect. The Dream Machine Pro is the leaner classic, and the Dream Machine Pro Max raises device and camera-storage ceilings. Prefer to keep routing separate from Wi-Fi? Pair a compact Cloud Gateway Ultra (or the multi-gig Cloud Gateway Fiber) with your own APs. See all gateways.

Switches — connect and power everything

UniFi switches carry your wired gear and deliver PoE so APs and cameras run on a single cable. For a desk or small rack, the USW Lite 16 PoE is a fanless 16-port workhorse, and the USW Flex 2.5G PoE feeds Wi-Fi 7 APs at full speed. Add up the PoE draw of everything first — our free PoE Budget Calculator does the math so you pick a switch with headroom. Browse Switches and PoE & Power.

Access points — Wi-Fi 7

Ubiquiti's current generation is Wi-Fi 7 under the U7 name. The U7 Pro is the mainstream pick for a home lab, the U7 Lite is the affordable entry, and the U7 Pro Max tops the indoor line. One Pro-class AP covers an open area or two to three rooms. Shop Access Points.

Cameras — UniFi Protect in the same console

A big reason people love UniFi is that video lives in the same dashboard as the network. Pair a Dream Machine (with storage) with a few G-series cameras and you have local recording with no monthly fee. Browse Cameras & Surveillance.

Racking it cleanly

A tidy rack is half the fun. For a desktop or shelf build, the Ubiquiti U-Rack 6U Toolless Mini Rack holds a gateway, a switch, and an AP or two with no tools — add the sliding shelf for non-rackmount gear. Growing past that, a 12U wall-mount cabinet (glass or perforated door, 450 or 600 mm depth) mounts a full home lab on the wall. The Dream Machine Pro/Pro Max/SE and UniFi Pro-series switches are 1U rack-mount by design, so they bolt straight in. A few habits keep it clean: leave a 1U gap above anything that runs warm, use short pre-made patch cables colored per VLAN, and plan power with a rack PDU and a UPS if uptime matters. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a subscription to run a UniFi home lab?

No. Every UniFi gateway runs the controller software built in, and UniFi Protect records cameras locally with no monthly fee. You manage everything yourself from the UniFi app or a browser.

Can I start small and grow?

Yes — that is the point of the ecosystem. Begin with a gateway and one AP, then adopt switches, more APs, and cameras over time; they all appear in the same console as you add them.

How many access points do I need?

Plan on roughly one Pro-class AP per open area or every two to three rooms. Thick walls and multiple floors push that up — when in doubt, add a unit rather than stretching one thin.

Do you sell racks?

Yes — we stock Ubiquiti racks, from the 6U Toolless Mini Rack for a desktop build to 12U wall-mount cabinets for a full home lab. Browse them in racks & mounting. We can also source a PDU or patch panels with your order.

Rack or wall-mount for a home lab?

A small wall-mount enclosure is plenty for a gateway, one switch, and a patch panel. Move to a full 19" floor rack once you are adding multiple switches, a UPS, and cameras with local storage.
